Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK. It is increasing at a rate three times that of average municipal waste growth, with much of it destined for landfill.
WEEE is any electrical or electronic waste, whether whole or broken, that is destined for disposal. The definition includes household appliances such as washing machines and cookers, IT and telecommunications equipment, electrical and electronic tools, toys and leisure equipment and certain medical devices.
A well-managed approach towards the disposal of WEEE is vital. The sheer volume and the potentially hazardous nature of the waste represent a significant environmental issue if not regulated effectively.
An authorised treatment facility (ATF) is a site permitted to carry out treatment on waste electrical and electronic wastes. This can include depollution, disassembly, shredding, recovery, or preparation for disposal. Any operator of a site or sites receiving WEEE direct from a designated collection facility (DCF), distributor, or end-user can apply to become approved. Only approved ATFs (AATFs) like MGH Recycling can issue evidence notes for the treatment, recovery or recycling of WEEE.
